What does Key Party mean?
A key party is a pop-culture partner-swapping format in which keys are drawn at random to suggest pairings. Modern consent standards require each person to choose freely; a random draw never creates permission or an obligation.
Key parties became embedded in the cultural image of 1970s suburban swinging through fiction, film, and later nostalgia. In the familiar version, guests put keys in a bowl and a draw suggests a pairing. Pop culture likely made the format look more common and uniform than it was.
A draw is not consent. Every participant must be free to decline, choose someone else, or leave, and modern organizers should state that clearly rather than using game mechanics as pressure.
