What does Polycule mean?

A polycule is the network of people connected through overlapping polyamorous relationships — all partners, metamours, and their partners, visualized as a molecule-like web of connections.

The word polycule blends 'poly' (multiple) with 'molecule' to describe the organic, branching structure of an interconnected polyamorous network. Unlike a couple or a triad, a polycule has no fixed shape: it grows and contracts as relationships form and end, and its members may have varying levels of connection and knowledge of one another.

Polycule maps — informal diagrams of who is connected to whom — are a tool some polyamorous networks use to keep track of connection lines and to think through questions of consent, STI disclosure, and social events. They make the abstract concrete.

In the Lifestyle, the polycule concept occasionally surfaces in long-term social groups where friendships and play partnerships have become genuinely interwoven. Understanding the term helps navigate those social webs gracefully.
