Couples
How do we set rules as a couple before exploring the lifestyle?
Start with a clear conversation about what each partner is comfortable with, what is off-limits, and what a slow entry into the lifestyle looks like. Write down your agreements. Revisit them after every new experience. Rules that feel right today may need adjusting as you learn more about what you actually want.
Setting rules is the most important thing a couple can do before they attend any lifestyle event or create a profile on a lifestyle platform. The conversation should happen when you are both calm, not rushed, and not in the middle of planning a specific event.
Start with the basics: what physical activities are you both comfortable with? What are absolute off-limits? How do you want to handle in-the-moment decisions — can each partner make independent choices, or do you need to check in with each other first? What happens if one of you wants to leave an event early?
Beyond the physical, talk about the emotional landscape. How do you both feel about the other partner being physically attracted to someone else? What happens if one of you develops feelings for a regular connection? How will you handle jealousy if it comes up?
The rules you set at the beginning will almost certainly change. That is normal and healthy. What matters is that you revisit them deliberately — after events, after new encounters, and periodically even when nothing particular has happened. The couples who do this well tend to feel that the lifestyle strengthened their relationship.
One practical approach: write down your current agreement before your first event. Include what you are and are not open to, your communication signals for the evening (a code word that means you want to leave, a check-in time), and a plan for how you will debrief afterward. The structure removes ambiguity and protects both partners.
