What is an open relationship?
An open relationship is one in which both partners agree that each may pursue sexual — and sometimes romantic — connections with other people. It is a broad umbrella defined by the mutual agreement itself, covering arrangements from occasional swinging to ongoing outside relationships, with honesty and consent as the constant.
An open relationship is any committed partnership where both people have agreed that one or both may connect with others outside the relationship. The defining feature is explicit mutual consent — it is not one partner permitting while the other merely tolerates, and it is never one partner acting in secret.
The term is deliberately broad. Some open relationships function much like swinging — the couple explores together, recreationally. Others are more individually oriented, with each partner having their own outside connections. Some allow only physical encounters; others include emotional or romantic ones. The couple defines the terms.
Open relationship overlaps with, but is broader than, an open marriage (the same idea within a marriage) and distinct from polyamory (which centres multiple loving relationships) and swinging (which is typically couple-anchored and recreational). Many people combine elements; the labels describe a general orientation, not a strict rulebook.
Opening a relationship works best when the couple is already secure and communicates well. The most important first step is an unhurried, honest conversation about what each person genuinely wants and is concerned about — not logistics, but feelings and boundaries — revisited over time.
