Events & Etiquette
What is a play room at a lifestyle event?
A play room is a private or semi-private area at a lifestyle club or event designated for physical intimacy. Most clubs separate social areas (bar, dance floor, common rooms) from play areas, with clear entry conventions and different consent norms in each space. Entering a play area is itself a signal of intent.
Most lifestyle venues distinguish between social spaces and play spaces. Social areas — bar, common room, patio, dance floor — operate under everyday social norms: conversation, dancing, flirting, but not physical intimacy. Play areas are designated spaces where the norms shift to allow physical activity.
Entry into a play area is governed by different consent norms. In most venues, couples who enter together have established between themselves what they are open to. Single women and some single men may also use play areas. The convention at most clubs is that presence in a play area signals openness to social engagement within the space, but that does not mean anything specific is consented to — explicit communication still matters.
Play room setups vary by venue. Some are single large rooms with multiple stations. Some have private rooms with lockable doors for couples who want complete privacy. Some have viewing areas. The setup at a specific event or club is described in the venue overview on the Invitation or in the venue's House listing.
The rule about respecting others in play areas is even more important than in social areas, because the vulnerability is higher. Approaching a couple without invitation, touching without clear consent, and not respecting a no or a pause are all serious violations that good hosts take immediate action on.
For first-time attendees, you are under no obligation to use play areas at all. Many couples attend their first several events purely in social mode and find that perfectly satisfying. The experience of simply socialising with interesting people in a verified community has its own value.
