What is a throuple?
A throuple is a committed romantic relationship between three people, all of whom are involved with one another — a form of polyamory. It differs from a couple occasionally inviting a third for play: a throuple is an ongoing three-person partnership where all three consider themselves equal partners.
A throuple — a blend of 'three' and 'couple' — is a committed romantic relationship involving three people who are all partners with one another. It is a form of polyamory, meaning the bonds are romantic and ongoing, not just sexual. All three people consider themselves part of a single relationship, and the structure is built on the same foundations as any relationship: communication, trust, and mutual consent.
A throuple is distinct from a couple who occasionally invites a third person for shared experiences. In the lifestyle, a single person who joins couples for play is often called a 'unicorn,' and that arrangement is usually recreational rather than a committed three-way partnership. A throuple, by contrast, is a relationship all three people are committed to maintaining over time.
Throuples can take many forms. Some are 'triads' where all three partners are romantically involved with each other equally; others are 'vee' relationships where one person is involved with two partners who are not romantically involved with each other. The specific shape is defined by the people in it, not by any template.
Like all ethical non-monogamy, a healthy throuple depends on explicit agreement, honest and frequent communication, and clear boundaries that everyone helps set. Jealousy and logistics are managed the same way they are in any relationship — by talking openly rather than assuming.
If you are exploring relationship structures beyond the couple, the JoinTheSwing glossary and the non-monogamy answer explain how throuples, polyamory, and swinging relate to one another.
