What is compersion?

Compersion is the warm, positive feeling that comes from witnessing a partner's joy — including joy that involves another person. It is frequently described as the emotional opposite of jealousy, and it names something that, for a long time, the English language had no single word for. The term is believed to have originated in polyamory communities and has since spread across ethical non-monogamy, the swinging lifestyle, and open-relationship spaces.

In the lifestyle, compersion is often the emotional foundation of hotwife and stag/vixen dynamics. The partner who supports or watches is not tolerating something difficult — they are actively enjoying it, drawing genuine pleasure from their partner's pleasure. This reframe is what turns an experience that might otherwise feel threatening into an expression of trust and affection.

Compersion is not automatic or universal, and feeling it does not mean a person never experiences jealousy. Most people develop compersion over time, through honest conversations, small experiments, and reflection.
