What does Compersion mean?

Compersion is the feeling of joy or satisfaction derived from seeing a partner experience pleasure or happiness with someone else — sometimes described as the emotional opposite of jealousy.

Compersion is one of the foundational emotional concepts in ethical non-monogamy. The word is believed to have originated in polyamory communities in the 1980s, but it has spread across ENM, the Lifestyle, and open-relationship spaces because it names something that was previously nameless: the warm, positive feeling that comes from witnessing a partner's joy, even when that joy involves another person.

In the Lifestyle, compersion is often the emotional engine behind hotwife dynamics and stag/vixen arrangements. The partner who watches or supports their spouse's experience is not tolerating something difficult — they are actively enjoying it, drawing pleasure from the partner's pleasure. This reframe transforms an experience that might otherwise feel like a threat into an expression of deep affection.

Compersion is not automatic or universal. It is often developed over time, through conversations, small experiments, and reflection. Many couples in the Lifestyle describe a journey from initial jealousy through processing and communication to something that feels like genuine compersion — and they credit that journey with strengthening their primary relationship.
