What is a friends-with-benefits relationship?

Friends with benefits describes two people who maintain a friendship that also includes a sexual element, without the commitment, exclusivity, or escalation expectations of a romantic relationship. The 'benefits' are the physical side; the 'friends' part is genuine, which distinguishes it from a purely transactional encounter.

Within ethical non-monogamy, an FWB arrangement is one of the lightest and most common structures. It can exist alongside other relationships when everyone involved knows and agrees. As with every form of consensual non-monogamy, the thing that makes it work — and keeps it ethical — is honesty: clear, mutual agreement about what the relationship is, what it is not, and what each person expects.

The usual pitfalls are unspoken assumptions and mismatched feelings. The healthiest FWB arrangements are explicit about boundaries, exclusivity or its absence, how it ends, and how the friendship is protected. Checking in periodically keeps both people on the same page.
