What is full swap?
Full swap — also called hard swap — is lifestyle play in which couples exchange partners for full sexual activity, including intercourse, with everyone's explicit consent. It contrasts with soft swap, which stops short of intercourse. Neither is more advanced; couples set their own limit, and many begin soft before deciding whether full swap fits them.
Full swap is the term for a couple engaging in full sexual activity, including intercourse, with another couple's partner, as part of a mutually consensual encounter. It is also called hard swap — the word 'hard' refers to the completeness of the exchange, not intensity or roughness. Full swap sits at one end of a spectrum whose other reference point is soft swap.
Soft swap means play that stops short of intercourse with others — commonly kissing, touching, or oral intimacy, with each couple defining its own line. Full swap includes intercourse. Neither is more advanced or more correct; they are simply different choices that couples communicate plainly before meeting anyone, and a couple's preference can evolve over time as trust and experience grow.
Most couples new to the lifestyle begin as soft swap to build comfort and trust, then decide together whether full swap ever feels right. There is no expectation or pressure to escalate — many couples remain soft swap by choice, and skilled hosts and events respect that completely.
Stating your swap preference clearly, in advance, is essential etiquette. Most experienced couples note it plainly in their profile and revisit the conversation before each new encounter so there is never ambiguity in the moment.
The JoinTheSwing couples swapping guide breaks down the full spectrum and how to have these conversations, and the terminology decoder explains the common shorthand.
