What is soft swap?
Soft swap means couples socialise and may engage in activities together — kissing, dancing, some physical contact — but do not include penetrative sex with anyone outside their own partnership. Full swap means penetrative sex is included. Couples define their own limits.
Soft swap is one of the clearest examples of how the lifestyle gives couples precise language to describe their comfort level. A couple who identifies as soft swap is signalling that they are open to socialising, dancing, kissing, and light physical contact with others, but that intercourse stays within their own relationship.
Full swap is the term for couples who are open to intercourse with other partners. Neither arrangement is better than the other — they are simply different points on a spectrum, and many couples move along that spectrum over time as they gain experience and trust.
Communicating your swap preference clearly before any social event or introduction is not just polite — it is essential. Ambiguity leads to awkward moments and missed connections. Most experienced lifestyle couples state their preference plainly in their profile and revisit the conversation before every new encounter.
Swap preferences don't have to be symmetrical. Plenty of couples run one-sided arrangements on purpose — hotwife and stag/vixen dynamics, where one partner plays and the other supports or watches, are recognised, common, and completely valid. What matters isn't that both partners do the same thing; it's that both partners genuinely agree to the arrangement. The lifestyle runs on mutual consent, not matching scorecards.
If you are new to defining your boundaries, the Couples Swapping guide has a detailed breakdown of the swap spectrum and how to have productive conversations with your partner before you attend your first event.
