What is the difference between swinging and polyamory?

Swinging and polyamory are both forms of consensual non-monogamy, but they differ in focus. Swinging is primarily recreational and sexual, usually couple-anchored and event-driven. Polyamory centres on having multiple loving, romantic relationships at once. Many people blend elements of both; the labels describe orientation, not strict rules.

Swinging and polyamory are both forms of consensual non-monogamy — relationship structures where people have more than one partner with everyone's knowledge and agreement — but they emphasise different things. The clearest distinction is sexual versus romantic focus.

Swinging is primarily recreational and sexual. It is usually anchored around a committed couple who explore with others together — at events, mixers, or through introductions — while keeping their emotional primary bond exclusive. The connections are typically about shared experience and excitement rather than developing additional romantic relationships.

Polyamory, by contrast, centres on having multiple loving, romantic relationships at the same time, all with consent. A polyamorous person may have two or more partners they are genuinely emotionally invested in, and those relationships are ongoing rather than recreational. A throuple is one example of a polyamorous structure.

In practice the line blurs. Some swingers develop ongoing friendships or connections; some polyamorous people also enjoy recreational play. Many people combine elements of both, and the labels describe a general orientation rather than a strict rulebook. What unites them is the same foundation: explicit consent, honest communication, and clear boundaries.

The JoinTheSwing glossary and the non-monogamy answer map out how swinging, polyamory, open relationships, and other structures relate to one another.
