What does Hall Pass mean?

A hall pass is a one-time or limited permission granted by one partner to the other to pursue an outside connection, typically under specific agreed conditions — a casual, time-limited form of openness.

The hall pass concept borrows a school-hallway metaphor to describe a temporary permission slip: one partner grants the other explicit latitude to pursue a connection outside the relationship, usually tied to a specific context such as a work trip, a conference, or a night apart. The permission is bounded — it doesn't change the overall relationship structure, it simply lifts the exclusivity expectation for a defined window.

Hall passes occupy an interesting position in ENM discourse. They're more structured than a vague 'be discreet' agreement but less transformative than a full open-relationship negotiation. Critics within the ENM community sometimes note that framing consent as a 'pass' retains a gatekeeping dynamic that full mutual openness dissolves. Proponents see the structure as exactly what makes it workable for couples who aren't ready for broader openness.

For Lifestyle participants, hall passes often arise around specific event contexts: one partner is traveling, a resort weekend is coming up, or a specific opportunity has presented itself. The platform's Letter system and private event RSVPs make it easy to act on a hall pass discreetly.
