What is relationship anarchy?

Relationship anarchy (sometimes 'RA') is a philosophy that questions the idea that relationships must follow a set ladder — that romance ranks above friendship, that a 'primary' partner automatically outranks others, or that connections must escalate toward a fixed template. Instead, each relationship is negotiated on its own terms by the people in it.

Within ethical non-monogamy, relationship anarchy means a person may have several meaningful connections without ranking them by a built-in hierarchy. Commitments, exclusivity, and expectations are chosen explicitly and consensually for each relationship rather than assumed. It values autonomy, communication, and treating each person as an individual.

Relationship anarchy is distinct from polyamory and swinging, though it can overlap with both. Polyamory describes having multiple loving relationships; swinging describes recreational, couple-anchored play; relationship anarchy describes a stance toward how any relationship is structured. A person can be polyamorous and a relationship anarchist, or neither.

Like all consensual non-monogamy, it depends on honest, ongoing communication and explicit agreement — arguably more so, because fewer defaults are assumed. The freedom it offers comes with the responsibility to define expectations clearly with each person.
