What does Check-In mean?
A check-in is a deliberate pause to ask a partner how they are actually doing. Couples agree on a signal beforehand so either can step out of a situation without explaining themselves.
The check-in is the most useful habit couples bring to an event, and the easiest to skip. It is a short, private moment — a look, a phrase, a walk to the bar — where the honest answer to "are you good?" is possible.
Experienced couples agree on a signal in advance precisely so that using it costs nothing socially. A pre-agreed word or gesture means either partner can end an interaction without anyone having to perform a reason in the moment.
Check-ins matter afterwards too. Much of what people process about an evening surfaces the next day, and couples who build in that conversation tend to have better experiences than those who assume silence means agreement.
