What does Fluid Bonded mean?
Fluid bonded describes partners who have agreed to forgo barrier protection with each other as part of an explicitly negotiated sexual health agreement — requiring regular STI testing and clear communication about outside partners.
Fluid bonding is a sexual health term that has been widely adopted in ENM and Lifestyle communities to describe a specific, negotiated level of intimacy between partners. Two people who are fluid bonded have agreed that they will have unprotected intercourse with each other, in the context of a broader agreement about barrier use with all other partners and regular STI testing.
The concept is important in the Lifestyle because it makes explicit a decision that in monogamy is often assumed. Fluid bonding is not the default when you become 'serious' with someone in ENM — it is a conscious choice, discussed openly, with shared responsibility for the health agreements it requires.
For a primary couple who are fluid bonded, the decision about whether to add a third person to that bond (or to always use protection with play partners) is a major part of their safer-sex agreement. Many couples in the Lifestyle maintain fluid bonding only within the primary relationship and use barrier protection with all others.
