What does Swap Party mean?

A swap party is a social-play gathering where couples meet with the explicit intention of swapping partners — either as a structured event format or as the understood cultural norm of the gathering.

Swap party is a colloquial term that can describe anything from a small, informal gathering of four people to a large club event. The defining feature is that swapping — of some kind, at whatever boundary the couples involved have set — is the understood purpose. Unlike a meet-and-greet (which is explicitly not a play event) or a general club night (where play is available but not required), a swap party carries an implicit expectation of participation.

This distinction matters for newcomers. Attending a club night with soft-swap intentions is common and respected. Attending a gathering that has been explicitly organized as a swap party with the same expectations requires clearer communication about what you're comfortable with before you walk in the door.

The term is used loosely in the community and may cover a wide range of event types. When in doubt, ask the host directly what the format and expectations are. A good host will tell you honestly and without judgment.
