What does Vanilla mean?
Vanilla is the informal term for conventional, monogamous relationships and individuals outside the Lifestyle community — used descriptively, not critically, to distinguish the two social worlds.
Vanilla is the community shorthand for 'mainstream monogamous' — not as a pejorative but as a practical distinction. Lifestyle participants often maintain separate social lives: vanilla friends and family who know them as a couple without knowing about their Lifestyle participation, and a separate community of trusted, verified peers who share that context. Managing this division is sometimes called 'the closet' of the Lifestyle.
The term also appears in logistical contexts. A 'vanilla' hotel is one where Lifestyle-specific behavior would be inappropriate and noticed. A 'vanilla social life' is the part of a member's world that doesn't intersect with the community. Maintaining healthy vanilla relationships and friendships is widely seen as important for balance and discretion.
