How do lifestyle platforms handle photo and data privacy?
Privacy-conscious platforms keep photos behind access controls rather than public view. On JoinTheSwing photos sit behind the sign-in wall, profile photos need a consent grant before another member can see them, and private albums need explicit per-viewer permission. Member content is never indexed. Verification images go to Veriff; we never receive or store them.
Photo privacy on lifestyle platforms exists on a spectrum. The legacy directory model — where member photos are publicly visible and indexed by search engines — is the least private version and the most common on older platforms. At the other end, privacy-first platforms keep every photo behind the sign-in wall, with layered access controls that require explicit member consent before any image is visible to another member.
JoinTheSwing uses a consent-gated model. Profile photos are visible only to other verified members, and members can control exactly who sees what through private album permissions — granting access to specific individuals rather than broadcasting to everyone. Photos are never publicly indexed, cached for search engines, or served to anyone who is not signed in. The platform is designed so that a Google search for your name returns nothing connected to JoinTheSwing.
Data privacy extends beyond photos. Member profile information, message history, event RSVPs, and travel itineraries are all behind the sign-in wall. The platform does not sell member data, does not build advertising profiles, and does not share information with third parties except where required for core functionality (the identity provider for verification, the email provider for notifications).
The verification process is the most sensitive data flow and is handled with a deliberate zero-retention architecture. Veriff, the third-party identity provider, processes the ID and selfie under its own privacy and retention terms. JoinTheSwing receives only a pass/fail result — the underlying images never touch our servers. This means there is nothing sensitive to breach from the verification step.
