Clothing-optional travel guide — 2026

Clothing-optional resorts: where to go, and how they differ.

A clothing-optional resort is a property where guests may be nude or clothed as they choose, in some or all areas. This page lists the clothing-optional, au naturel and naturist destinations our own destination guides cover — where each one is, who may stay, and how its format differs.

The terms

Clothing-optional, au naturel, naturist, lifestyle: what the words actually mean.

Clothing-optional is a property rule: guests may be nude or clothed as they choose, in some or all areas. It says nothing about the social culture — the same label covers a quiet naturist retreat and an adults-only lifestyle resort. What is a clothing-optional resort?

Au naturel is the stronger form: nudity is the norm in the areas that carry the label, and guests there are expected to take part. Hedonism II and both Desire properties run au naturel areas alongside clothing-optional ones. Naturist (or nudist) names the culture rather than the code: social nudity practised as normal and non-sexual. Hidden Beach has a quiet, social naturist culture rather than a party one, and is not a swingers venue; Cap d'Agde's daytime village is classic European naturism. What is a naturist resort?

Lifestyle names the social culture — couples open to meeting other couples. Some properties are both clothing-optional and lifestyle-oriented; others are firmly one or the other, which is the distinction worth checking before booking. Lifestyle resorts, in full

The list

The clothing-optional destinations our guides cover.

Thirteen destinations carry a clothing-optional, au naturel or naturist format in our destination guides. Each row restates that destination's own record; the link goes to the full guide.

One entry is deliberately absent: Temptation Cancun Resort is topless-optional, not clothing-optional, and its record says it is neither an au naturel nor a lifestyle property.

All-inclusive or not

Does the rate include everything?

  • All-inclusive

Hedonism II describes itself as all-inclusive, with meals, drinks and the entertainment programme in the rate; some specialty items and premium pours carry surcharges. The two Desire properties are all-inclusive and au naturel, and Hidden Beach is all-inclusive under the Karisma name.

  • Separately priced

Most United States properties here are not all-inclusive in that sense. Caliente needs a daily or annual membership; Secrets Hideaway prices club access separately from lodging; Sea Mountain separates spa access from overnight stays; Mon Chalet sells swimming passes; and the Rooftop Resort sells day and night passes.

  • Not a package

Cap d'Agde is the outlier: it is not a package. You book your own accommodation — a residence, hotel room or campsite pitch — and pay venues separately (Cap d'Agde (opens in a new tab), checked 2026-07-20).

  • Cruise fares

The charters run on a normal cruise fare basis: cabins and dining come with the ship, and the charter replaces the guest list and programming rather than the hardware.

Couples-only or not

Couples-only or not: what the records say.

The two Desire properties are couples-only, both partners checking in together, and both full-ship charters describe their sailings as couples-only. Hedonism II is the exception at the resort end: its own site addresses couples and singles alike.

In the United States, Secrets Hideaway counts couples and singles in its stated audience, and Caliente says single men may use a Vacation Club membership, a Preferred Annual Membership or daily entry, with single-male day passes sold in person only. Sea Mountain caters to women and couples. Policies change, so confirm them with the property before booking.

Cruises and charters

The clothing-optional options at sea.

Two of the thirteen destinations are not resorts but full-ship charters: Bliss Cruise, a couples-only lifestyle sailing with designated clothing-optional zones, and the Temptation Caribbean Cruise out of Miami, with designated au naturel areas. On both, the rest of the ship runs like a normal cruise — dining rooms expect clothing.

Neither is the same product as an adults-only mainstream cruise: Virgin Voyages is adults-only across its fleet and its ships are not clothing-optional charters (Virgin Voyages (opens in a new tab), checked 2026-08-16), so check the line's own conduct rules.

Etiquette basics

What applies at every property on this list.

  • Optional means optional

Guests in swimwear sit alongside guests who are nude in the same spaces, and nobody should be pressured either way. The exception is an area a property labels au naturel, where nudity is expected; cover-ups are usually asked for in restaurants and indoor venues.

  • Ask before you approach

Being on the property is never an invitation. Ask before joining a conversation, accept a refusal without argument, and follow the property's own rules on towels, seating and photography.

  • The house rules are the venue's

There is no universal code here: each property publishes its own conduct, photography and entry rules, and its staff enforce those. A naturist property such as Hidden Beach is not a lifestyle venue, and a lifestyle resort is not a naturist retreat — read the property's own page first.

  • Ask what kind of week you are booking

Group takeover weeks change the character of a resort week more than the brand name does. Check the property's own calendar for your dates and ask whether they fall in an open week or a group takeover.

Common questions

Clothing-optional resorts, answered plainly.

What is a clothing-optional resort?

A clothing-optional resort is a property where guests may be nude or clothed as they choose, in some or all areas. The choice is never a requirement: guests in swimwear sit alongside guests who are nude. House rules name the areas where clothing is expected, usually restaurants and indoor venues.

Which clothing-optional resorts are couples-only?

The two Desire properties in Puerto Morelos are couples-only, both partners checking in together, and both full-ship charters describe their sailings as couples-only. Hedonism II addresses couples and singles alike, and Secrets Hideaway and Caliente both list single guests.

Are there all-inclusive clothing-optional resorts?

Yes. Hedonism II describes itself as all-inclusive, the two Desire properties are all-inclusive and au naturel, and Hidden Beach is all-inclusive under the Karisma name. Most United States properties here are not, and Cap d'Agde is not a package: you book your own accommodation and pay venues separately.

Are there clothing-optional resorts in Florida?

Four Florida properties appear in our destination guides: Secrets Hideaway in Kissimmee, Caliente in Land O' Lakes, Paradise Lakes in Lutz, and the Rooftop Resort in Hollywood. Each sets its own membership or pass terms.

What is the difference between clothing-optional, au naturel and naturist?

Clothing-optional means nudity is permitted in some or all areas, and guests choose. Au naturel is stronger: nudity is the norm where that label applies. Naturist, or nudist, names the culture — social nudity treated as normal and non-sexual.

Do you have to be naked at a clothing-optional resort?

No. The point of clothing-optional is the choice, and at most properties on this list guests in swimwear and guests who are nude share the same spaces. The exceptions are au naturel areas, where nudity is expected, and indoor venues that ask for cover-ups.

Editorial methodology

Where the claims on this page come from.

Every claim about a named resort, charter or destination on this page restates what that venue's own site says about itself, as recorded in our destination guides and checked on each venue's own site in July–August 2026. FAQ answers name their sources in plain words instead of carrying URLs. Venue policies, calendars and prices change: confirm the current terms on the venue's own site before booking.
