What does Orgy mean?

Reviewed September 28, 2026

An orgy is a gathering where several consenting adults are sexual in a shared space. Most lifestyle events are not orgies, and at any group event each person chooses for themselves and can say no.

The word began as religion rather than revelry: English borrowed it in the 1560s for the secret rites of ancient Greek and Roman worship, from the Greek orgia, and the broader sense of a wild party followed later. Today it means a group sexual gathering, and it is also used loosely for any excess, as in 'an orgy of shopping'.

In the lifestyle the word is used less than outsiders expect. People more often speak of a play party or group play, and most events are social evenings with no play at all. Where a group scene does happen, it runs on the same rules as everything else: a host's house rules, asking each person first, and a no that needs no explanation.

The safer-sex basics apply with more care in a group: a new condom with every partner and on any shared toy, barriers for oral sex, regular testing, and staying sober enough to decide clearly.
