What does Play Partner mean?

A play partner is a person with whom someone chooses to explore consensual adult social or intimate activities. The term is broad and can mean different things in different communities, so the people involved should define it for themselves. A clear conversation may cover intentions, comfort levels, relationship status, privacy, safer-sex considerations, and what will not happen. Being called a play partner does not imply exclusivity, romance, commitment, or permission beyond what has been specifically discussed and freely agreed.

Respectful play partnerships rely on ongoing communication rather than assumptions. Partners may revisit boundaries before, during, and after time together, and anyone can pause, decline, or change their mind. It is sensible to learn the host’s house rules, confirm identity and expectations through appropriate channels, and make a private plan for arrival, departure, and check-ins. A play partner is not automatically a primary partner, metamour, or member of a polycule; those labels require their own discussion and mutual understanding.
