How does the Letters introduction system work on JoinTheSwing?
Messages — originally called Letters — is the consent-first messaging system on JoinTheSwing. You cannot message another member directly — you must first send a short introduction request. If they accept, a conversation thread opens. This prevents cold-contact noise and gives every recipient full control over who can reach them.
Letters was the original name for JoinTheSwing's Messages system. It exists because direct messaging on lifestyle platforms has historically been dominated by single men sending mass, impersonal outreach to every couple on the platform. The signal-to-noise ratio made the experience exhausting for couples, especially for the women in those couples.
Messages inverts that dynamic. Before you can send a direct message, you send a short introduction request — a few sentences that explain who you are, what drew you to their profile, and what kind of connection you are hoping to make. The recipient reviews your profile and request before deciding whether to open communication.
If they accept, a full conversation thread opens between you. If they decline, the thread does not open, and you receive a polite decline signal without knowing the specific reason. You cannot see whether a request was declined or simply not yet read.
The system creates a meaningful threshold that eliminates mass outreach. Because every introduction requires a genuine, specific note, the effort required to reach multiple couples is proportional to the investment. People who write thoughtful introductions tend to receive responses; people who send generic copy-paste requests tend not to.
Introduction requests have a receipt trail visible to support. If a member sends harassing or inappropriate introduction notes, that history is recoverable. The combination of verified identity and request receipts creates accountability at every step of the communication process.
