What does Letter (JTS Messaging) mean?
A Letter on JoinTheSwing is a consent-gated private message introduction. The sender must request a Letter thread; the recipient accepts or declines before any message is delivered — the architectural opposite of unsolicited DMs.
The Letter system is one of JoinTheSwing's most deliberate product decisions. On most social and dating platforms, any user can send a message to any other user at any time. The result is inbox fatigue, unsolicited content, and the gradual erosion of the feeling that messages mean something. Letters reverse this: every conversation begins with a request, and no content is delivered until the recipient consciously accepts.
The name is intentional. 'Message' suggests casual, disposable, instant. 'Letter' suggests considered, intentional, worth the recipient's attention and worth the sender's effort to compose. The architecture enforces the metaphor: request → review → accept or decline → conversation begins.
Letters can include voice notes, media attachments, and reactions. Threads can be archived, blocked, or reported. Every interaction leaves a support record — a durable record available to a trust team if something goes wrong. This is the full-stack implementation of consent in a messaging context.
