01 · Before you respond

02 · In the conversation

Ask a question that specifically invites the other partner's own words — see whether the answer sounds like it's actually theirs.
Ask directly: what are each of you individually looking for?

Notice whether one partner consistently answers for both, or defers every decision to the other.

03 · Reading the signals

Vague or evasive answers to the direct questions above are worth taking seriously as a reason to slow down.
